Yoga for Your Eyes - Help Yourself to Better Vision Naturally
Part I - Relaxation Tips for Healthy Eye Care
If you are reading this and experiencing tired, dry, burning and/or red eye lid rims along with occasional blurry vision, you may have computer vision syndrome (CVS). This is a reversible problem affecting over 90% of the computer literate population who continually work at computers for more than three hours each day. If you are not having these eye troubles now, to avoid future problems, read the following tips for reversing CVS or preventing the occurrence of visual disturbances created from incorrect and habitual over use.
The following are two relaxation tips for visual improvement and healthy care of your eyesight:
- Blink Often. Blinking your eye lashes frequently moistens the eyes and gives the eyes a short rest from light.
When you blink, gently close the eye lids and think of the eye lashes meeting, then, hold the eye lids closed for a few seconds before slowly opening the them; incorporate a long and deep breath in and out to increase the effect of this brief relaxation.
Staring at a bright computer screen for long periods of concentration can cause dry and strained eyes that eventually begin to burn. Squinting to see causes more tension and eye strain. CVS symptoms can last for longer periods of time.
- Add "Palming" to your daily eye care routine. The ancient yogic method of palming adds optic nerve relaxation as a main way to bring better clarity of vision and health to the eye, both mentally and physically.
When you palm, place your cupped hands over the eyes with the eye lids closed. Place the crossed fingers on the forehead and block out all light for total darkness. Think of the color back, the most relaxing color for the visual fields, and breathe long, slow and deep breaths for a few minutes of rest for the eyes, mind and rest of the body.
Continual use of the eyes over long periods without rest is just like using any muscle used without a rest, the eyes will perform less well and will give signals that they need a time out. Sleeping is not necessarily a rest for the eyes because often in sleep the eyes are active in dream and rem states in which tension can continue.
So, relaxation of the eyes with daily palming and blinking can be two of the most valuable and simple things that you can do to offset the effects of high and frequent use.
